IT Home Learning Lesson 6- Compulsory blog entry @ 10:52 PM
I am answering question 2.
My parents feel that the casinos in Singapore will only serve as a one-time solution for job and economic crisis, but many disadvantages awaits at the later stage. It is similar to lotteries in Singapore. They are only for use to buy or play with once a while, and not get addicted to it. Lotteries in Singapore are usually bought by those of the poor, but some teenagers are also seen buying lotteries at a age still considered young. My parents thus feel that the minimum age to buying lotteries should be raised a little, as those teenagers still have a bright future ahead of them and they should not let it go waste by getting stuck on lotteries. For those poor and elderly people who buy lottery to while their time away, my parents feel that they should not "burn" their fingers after betting too much or suffer regrets.
Singapore decided to build a casino here mainly is to provide more recreational spots in Singapore, letting there be more job availability and thus boosting our economy, especially during the economic crisis. Due to many people staying near those " Casino" areas, the accessibility to the casinos will be very easy and convenient for most of us. Thus, we will inevitably bring our whole family there and those young children will probably get hooked up in gambling at a very young age. This also implies to lottery, but as the casino is in the resort, children will probably get influenced by their parents very easily.
Despite there being economic benefits, the future of our future generations should also be considered. Allowing them to be bent on gambling from a young age is a bad habit that is difficult to change. With our future generations being those of compulsive gamblers, who will lead the country in the following years, will all our past governments hard work be tarnished at one go? Also, these will then lead to more and more problems arousing as people will suffer from family breakups, crime etc, just to get some money. Family ties will soon be gone and our police force will have a harder time nabbing criminals. More crimes will happen as more people will need more money, resulting in our homeland's safety being not as reliable as before. Tourists will have a bad impression on us and our economy will drop despite having a casino.
To sum up, I believe that the casino is just another major gambling place for us to spend our money and like lotteries and in the end, more people will be broke and this will effect both our economic and public image to others.
